Your first time with ChatGPT: no complications
If you have never used ChatGPT or tried it but do not know how to get the most out of it, this guide is for you. In a few minutes you will have an active account, know how to ask good questions and learn the tricks to get much better responses.
ChatGPT is the world's most popular AI assistant, and the best part: it has a very powerful free version that does not require a credit card.
Step 1: Create your free account
- Open your browser and go to chat.openai.com.
- Click "Sign up".
- You can register with your email, a Google account or a Microsoft account.
- Enter a name and verify your email if needed.
- Accept the terms of use.
- Done! You are inside. You will see a text box where you can start typing.
No credit card is required. The free version gives you full access to ChatGPT's base model.
Step 2: Know the interface
Once inside, the interface is simple:
New chat
In the top-left corner you will see "New chat". Each conversation is independent: one for work, another for studies, another for recipes. Think of it as WhatsApp tabs.
History
Your history appears on the left. You can go back to any previous conversation at any time. If you delete the history, the conversations are permanently removed.
The text box
At the bottom you have a box where you type your prompt (your question or instruction). After sending it, ChatGPT responds. You can keep typing to continue the conversation or ask for adjustments.
Step 3: Write good prompts (this is the key)
The difference between a bad and an excellent response is how you phrase your request. A prompt is simply the instruction you give ChatGPT.
Before and after: practical examples
| Bad prompt | Good prompt |
|---|---|
| "Give me ideas" | "Give me 5 Instagram post ideas about artificial intelligence for beginners, casual tone with hashtags" |
| "Write me an email" | "Write a formal email in Spanish to a client who is late on payment, professional but friendly tone, 150 words" |
| "Explain AI to me" | "Explain what artificial intelligence is simply for a 10-year-old child, with 3 everyday examples" |
| "Summarize this for me" | "Summarize this article into 5 key points, in Spanish, neutral tone, maximum 200 words" |
Formula for a good prompt
[What I want] + [Context] + [Format] + [Tone]
Full example: "Summarize this 1000-word article into 5 key points, in Spanish, professional tone, bullet list format."
Step 4: Prompts ready to copy and paste
Here are real examples you can copy directly into ChatGPT:
- Write: "Draft an email to cancel a dentist appointment, polite tone, in Spanish, 100 words."
- Summarize: "Summarize this text in 3 main points: [paste text here]"
- Translate: "Translate this paragraph from Spanish to English, keeping a natural, fluid tone."
- Explain: "Explain what machine learning is as if I were a high school student, with a real-life example."
- Brainstorm: "Give me 5 creative names for a blog about photography with artificial intelligence, in Spanish."
- Code: "Write a Python function that sorts a list of numbers from smallest to largest, with explanatory comments."
- Create content: "Write a 280-character promotional tweet for an online AI course, enthusiastic tone with 2 hashtags."
- Analyze: "Analyze the pros and cons of using ChatGPT in education, in a 200-word paragraph."
Step 5: Use advanced features
Voice input
In the mobile app or on chat.openai.com, click the microphone icon to speak directly to ChatGPT. It can listen to your questions and respond by voice. Useful when you are on the go.
Upload files
You can attach PDF files, images or documents for ChatGPT to analyze. For example: upload a contract and ask it to explain the clauses, or upload a photo and ask it to describe it.
Choose a model
In the top bar you can select the model. The free version uses GPT-4o mini (fast and efficient). Paid users can access GPT-4o (more powerful) and other experimental models.
Step 6: Free plan vs. paid plan
| Feature | Free | Plus ($20/month) |
|---|---|---|
| Main model | GPT-4o mini | GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, o3 |
| Message limits | Daily, generous | Much higher |
| Voice features | Basic | Full |
| File analysis | Yes | Yes, with greater capacity |
| Image generation | Limited | Full (DALL·E) |
| Speed | Normal | Priority |
| New features | Sometimes | Priority access |
The free version is more than enough for 90% of users. You only need Plus if you use ChatGPT several hours a day or for intensive professional work.
Tips to get the most out of it
- Be specific: The more detail you give in your prompt, the better the response.
- Request a format: "Give me a table," "in list format," "in a paragraph."
- Iterate: If the first response is not perfect, ask for adjustments: "shorter," "more formal," "with examples."
- Give context: "I am a math teacher" or "I have a small restaurant" completely changes the response.
- Do not trust blindly: Always verify data, figures and references. ChatGPT can make mistakes.
- Use separate conversations: Do not mix different topics in the same chat to keep context clear.
- Try voice: Sometimes it is faster to speak than to type, especially on mobile.
Verdict
ChatGPT is an incredibly easy tool to start using and once you get the hang of prompts, it becomes an indispensable assistant. Start with the free version, use specific prompts, do not be afraid to experiment and above all, always verify what it tells you for important tasks. With a few days of practice, you will be surprised how quickly it helps you in your daily life.

Author's opinion
I have seen hundreds of people start using ChatGPT and the most common mistake is writing too vaguely: "give me ideas" or "explain everything". The secret is to treat ChatGPT as a smart collaborator that knows nothing about your context. The more you give it, the better it responds. Do not be afraid to write long paragraphs with instructions.
My other recommendation is to practice with real tasks from your daily life. Do not use ChatGPT just for the sake of it: ask it to summarize the email you just received, help you draft a difficult message or explain something you are reading. Practicality is the key to enjoying it and incorporating it into your routine.
